Baume et Mercier 8628 Riviera Review

Baume Mercier 8628 RivieraThe Baume Mercier Riviera collection is chalk full of watches like the 8628 model; keep reading for my full review of this timeless chronograph watch.

Here’s how I’d like to structure this review…Basically, I’m just going to jump right in and give you the down low on the Baume Mercier 8628 Riviera watch, going into intricate detail on all the features of this watch. I’ve tried to make the review pretty easy to find what you’re looking for, so if you’ve got specific questions about the automatic movement, or the stainless steel case for example, you shouldn’t have trouble locating those sections below. Anyways, check out this watch:

Below I’ll go over the detailed specs of this Riviera watch…If you’ve got any questions they should be answered here.

ETA Swiss Automatic Movement – I’m about 95% sure that the movement powering this Baume et Mercier watch is an ETA Valjoux 7750, although there’s a slim chance that it could be an ETA 2894 as well. I guess either way, I do know that it’s an ETA produced movement.

The Valjoux 7750, when calibrated and run under optimal conditions (right climate, well lubricated and calibrated) will stay within +/- 2 seconds a day, which is pretty much as accurate as you’re going to get from an automatic movement without going into the much more expensive in-house made movements (Such as the ones used by Zenith or Rolex).

This particular watch beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, which is pretty dang fast.

Automatic Chronograph w/ 3 Dials – There’s a 30 minute dial at the 12 position, a small seconds dial at the 9 position and a 12 hour dial at the 6 position. Additionally there’s a date window located at the 3 position.

The chronograph runs very well (as you might expect from the Valjoux 7750) and you reset and start/stop it via the pushers on the side of the watch.

White Mat Dial – This is the part of the watch that really sets it apart from the rest of the Riviera collection. The Baume Mercier 8628 Riviera has a beautiful all white dial that’s accented by black, superluminova coated roman numeral hour markers. The chronograph has all white dials as well, although the numbers within the subdials are Arabic numerals instead of Roman.

The hands are simple slim pointers, there’s a Phi symbol on the hour hand though.

The black outlined date window is extremely easy to read, along with everything else on the dial. To the left of where the hands connect to the face you’ll find some text that says “Baume & Mercier Geneve” and below that, “Automatic 100 Meters”. You can probably guess what that text means.

XXL Stainless Steel Case – Although this trait is shared by every other watch in the Riviera collection, the trademark 12 sided case looks absolutely amazing. Made from high grade stainless steel, the bezel is dodecagonal (12 sided) to tribute the 12 horological points on a watch (12 hours). The screws in the screw down bezel are equidistant from each other and add a nice equality to the watch that brings the whole design together.

The front of the watch is protected by a sapphire crystal watch window that’s so scratch resistant, if you took your keys and scratched along the surface it wouldn’t leave a mark.

The case is water resistant to 100 meters and 43mm in diameter.

Black Vulcanized Rubber Strap – This is the subtlety of the watch. Because the strap is made from simple black rubber instead of PVD stainless steel or something, it can easily be worn with jeans and a tshirt without being weird, but because it’s black it goes extremely well with a suit, too.

The strap is secured with a triple folding clasp which is a bit of work initially to set up and adjust. However, once adjusted the watch will easily slide on and off, and the triple folding clasp is very secure when properly adjusted.

My Verdict of the Baume et Mercier 8628 Riviera

That about covers most of the features of the Baume Mercier 8628 Riviera…It’s definitely a no-nonsense men’s watch. It’s a high end automatic chronograph watch that stays true to the theme of the Riviera collection; men’s watches with contemporary horological design that’s executed beautifully through the all white dial and dodecagonal Riviera case.

Well, thanks for reading my entire Baume et Mercier 8628 review…I hope that I answered any questions you had about this watch. If I didn’t, then check out my Baume et Mercier Riviera Collection review first (I go over the best watches from the entire collection), then a good place to look would be the Amazon customer reviews, or possibly Baume Mercier’s own website.
