My Baume & Mercier 8689 Classima Skeleton Review

Obviously, I think pretty highly of this watch. Baume et Mercier is a great company and the Classima Executive is a great collection and the 8689 Skeleton model is a great watch. Simple as that. In order to be pretty thorough through this review I think I’ll just basically go over the points I covered in the pros and cons in more detail, if that works for you?

So, I’ll start elementary here…Every watch is powered by a single movement which is comprised of many parts. Quartz movements are operated through the electronic measuring of vibrating quartz crystals. Obviously, you need electricity for a Quartz movement, and hence quartz watches need a battery. This Baume and Mercier watch, however, is totally battery free because it has an AUTOMATIC movement.

An automatic movement is powered through a tiny little spring that turns with the kinetic energy generated through the swinging of your arm. That means that as long as you wear the 8689 Baume Mercier watch every day or two then you’re watch should never run out of power. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t ever need to wind it. It’s probably good to give your watch a good wind every couple weeks just to keep things moving smoothly. Winding a watch is sort of like the equivalent of going for a walk or exercising, it’s not necessary for the survival of the watch, but it sure does help every once and a while.

Now, I actually couldn’t tell you the exact model number of the movement used in this watch, however, I know that it’s an ETA movement, either the Valjoux 7750 or the ETA 2892. Not that it really matters, all that’s important is the accuracy of the watch, and I can tell you right now that this watch is about as accurate as they come, especially at this price (that is to say, under $5,000). The Valjoux is accurate to within a few seconds a week, the 2892 is a little closer to 6 or 8. Either way, they’re accurate, and for the price you’re not going to get anything more precise.

This watch is designed as a time keeping piece of art, not necessarily as a high performance watch (even though it is extremely precise). That’s why it’s only water resistant to 30 meters. That’s why there’s no rotating bezel. And that’s why the strap is made out of black alligator style leather, and not something more resilient to water, such as stainless steel.

That being said, the watch really is beautiful. A perfect men’s watch, Baume et Mercier perfectly coordinated every aspect of this watches design, and the exhibition window at the 12 o clock position is perfectly placed so that you can see just a glimpse of the movement. Just enough to entrance you. It’s absolutely stunning, and I can tell you that as good as it looks in pictures, it looks better in person.

The dial, obviously, looks astounding. A deep black finish matches the alligator leather strap perfectly. The numerals surrounding the dial are beautiful, with separate minute and 5 minute positioning.

Man, I really can’t stop looking at this watch! I’m sitting here writing this review and the Classima Skeleton is on my mind!

Heh. I meant that totally non sexually.

Of course.

Anyways! I feel like I’m starting to rant here…

My Verdict of the Baume & Mercier 7679 Classima Skeleton

By now you should know whether or not the Baume Mercier Classima Skeleton 8689 watch is for you or not. It’s a beautiful time piece, and it performs just as well as it looks. Baume and Mercier’s unique design is timeless, elegant and most importantly, masculine. There’s not much more I can say about it really. Either you like it or you don’t.

Personally, I love it.

Thanks for reading through my whole review. I actually do put some work into these, so it feels good to know that you made it this far…It means that you’re at least semi interested, and that means I’m doing my job! I hope that I’ve helped to shed some light on the Baume Mercier 8689 Classima Skeleton, and I wish you luck in finding that perfect watch! Feel free to check out more of WhatWatches.com!
