Below you’ll find all the noteworthy stats of this beautiful Classima Executives watch. I’ll go over everything from the movement to the black leather strap and triple folding clasp.

Check it out:

ETA Swiss Automatic Movement – The 8868 Classima watch actually isn’t powered by a Baume Mercier movement. Rather, for most of their watches Baume and Mercier uses the Swiss manufacturer, ETA, for their movements.

Is that a bad thing? NO! Absolutely not!

See, the thing is that the ETA movements, such as the Valjoux 7750 which runs the Classima 8868, are widely respected for their accuracy and craftsmanship. In fact, the Valjoux 7750 has been used by such brands as Cartier, IWX and Omega in their watches, which obviously are a tier above Baume et Mercier in cost.

Now, I should be perfectly clear here…There are actually two movements that it could be, and I’m not totally sure which it is. I’m about 80% sure it’s the Valjoux 7750, but there’s about a 20% or less chance that the watch is in fact run by the ETA 2894, which is still very respectable. Both movements have a power reserve of ~40 hours, but the Valjoux is more accurate by a few seconds per week.

Silver “Grain D’orge” Guilloche Dial – This is the most distinguishable feature of this Baume et Mercier men’s watch…The beautiful dial design. The most important aspect (at least, aesthetically) of the dial is, obviously, the guilloche.

The silver “grain d’orge” guilloche looks absolutely stunning and textured. A very distinguishable grain d’orge texture fills the inner dial where the black stainless steel hands, text and date window reside. Don’t know what grain d’orge is? I didn’t either, but it certainly fits the guilloche on the 8868.

The outer part of the dial, where the roman numerals and other indexes are, is a silver matte finish that drastically increases the readability of the watch. The contrast between the two textures displayed on the dial is stunning, and this is another instance where the picutre simply doesn’t do justice to the real thing.

XL Stainless Steel Case – Moveing outward from the dial, the first thing you’ll notice is the stainless steel case. This has been refitted for the XL Classima design, and is now 42mm in diameter. However, other than that, the Baume Mercier 8868’s case is pretty similar to all the other Classima watch cases.

Not a bad thing at all, since I love the Classima case…It’s slim, large, and easy to wear. Plus it’s water resistant to 30 meters, and the watch window is made from sapphire crystal, which is about as clear and scratch resistant as you’re going to get without going to diamonds.

Black Alligator Leather Strap – This is the most underrated feature of Baume et Mercier’s watches…You’re skin is in contact more with the strap than with anything else, and yet, this is often the last thing people list.

Oh wait. Heh. Whoops.

Suffice to say, the real leather strap is extremely comfortable. The triple folding clasp will require adjustment at first, but it’s a one time adjustment, and if you do it once then the watch is extremely easy to take on and off while maintaining that perfect fit.

My Verdict of the Baume & Mercier 8868 Classima

All in all I feel that the Baume Mercier 8868 Classima is a beautiful example of a men’s Swiss watch, and I think that Baume et Mercier did a great job of holding true to their motto: “Accept only perfection, only manufacture watches of the highest quality”

I have to give the Baume et Mercier Classima 8868 automatic watch my full stamp of approval. With an accurate enough movement that you don’t have to worry about precision, and a beautiful silver Grain D’orge guilloche, this watch is an unmistakable and unforgettable men’s watch.
